About Near and Far Explorers

Hi, I’m Sarah from the South West of the UK. I have three children(7, 10 and 13). I’ve been travelling in the UK and beyond for over 20 years and I’m here to share ways to incorporate more meaningful travel into your life, mixing budget friendly activities with occasional touches of luxury and a dose of culture and adventure.

Since becoming a family 13 years ago, we’ve been finding ways to budget and fit travel and adventure into a busy family life. That could be a walk in the woods, a weekend camping or a road trip. Occasionally we pack our bags for extended travel. We know it can be daunting to travel with children, and we are here with tips, tricks and itineraries to make it easier for you to travel with your family.

Whilst we’d love to trave full time, the realities of work and school mean we have become experts at finding ways to adventure during holidays and weekends.

When at home, you can find us exploring the beautiful UK countryside in a tent, renting a house to discover local history and culture, hiking as a family, or taking on new adventures to push us out of our comfort zone.
Further afield we’ve travelled across Europe by train for six weeks, hiked in Switzerland on a budget, explored Ireland’s beautiful Wild Atlantic Way and road tripped the length of New Zealand.

South West England

  • Oxford
  • Bristol
  • Cornwall
  • Devon

We live in the South West and have travelled the area extensively. Try Oxford or Bath for history and museums, Bristol for a creative, bustling city break or head to the coast in Cornwall and Devon for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Inland you’ll find stone age sites of Stonehenge and Avebury.

Wales

  • Pembrokeshire
  • Cardiff
  • Brecon Beacons
  • Snowdonia

For a small country, Wales has a huge variety of landscapes to explore. The vibrant capital, Cardiff is great for a weekend break. For stunning coastal scenery and wildlife, Pembrokeshire is hard to beat. Or head for the mountains of the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia for outstanding hiking opportunities.

Ireland

  • Wild Atlantic Way

Ireland, famed as the emerald isle, has jaw-dropping scenery at every turn. Try whale and dolphin watching on the west coast or road trip the Wild Atlantic way. With countless castles and a rich history, Ireland is a fantastic destination for a family holiday.

Italy

  • Lake Como
  • Florence
  • Cinque Terre
  • Venice

Whilst we would happily visit for the pasta and gelato alone, Italy is one of our favourite destinations. Italy never fails to amaze and is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Europe.

Rest of Europe

  • Switzerland
  • Berlin
  • Spain

Europe has over 40 countries to explore, each with its own distinct culture, language and traditions. Choose from incredible mountain ranges, historic cities or stunning coastline. Alternatively mix and match for a memorable family adventure. Train travel is easy and relatively affordable, making multi-destination holidays a great option.
